Tokyo Motor Fist debut album review (Ted Poley/Steve Brown)

If you know anything about 80’s melodic rock, then you know that a musical alliance between Danger Danger’s Ted Poley and Trixster’s Steve Brown is something that should make you sit up and take note. And rightly so.

The duo are joined by with Greg Smith (Ted Nugent, Rainbow, Alice Cooper) and Chuck Burgi (Rainbow, Blue Oyster Cult, Joe Lynn Turner). So that’s a pretty fine lineup, but how good is the album itself?

This album is chock full of great, catchy melodic hard rock songs, with great riffs that will make you feel good from the start. My personal favourites here include “Love Me Insane”, which has a great rhythm, soaring melodies, and some pretty sweet riffs. Ted Poley is on top form here. This is a song that will get your adrenaline pumping. “Put Me To Shame” has a real anthem feel to it, and its catchy enough to get stuck in your head for a good while, as well as seeing Brown pull off good solos.

“Love” is very much a classic Ted ballad reminiscent of his solo material as well as his ballads with Danger Danger, but it’s the song  “Don’t Let Me Go” which is the standout power ballad on this album as a result of Steve’s guitar work combined with Ted’s heartfelt vocals.

“Done To Me” does a great job of showcasing the talents of the various members, and allows the rhythm section of Chuck Burgi and Greg Smith to shine.

Tokyo Motor Fist is a great new release by highly respected members of the melodic rock community. This is an album of energetic songs, full of catchy hooks, great riffs, and killer rhythms. I highly recommend this, not just to fans of Danger Danger and Trixster who will undoubtedly love what this album has to offer, but to all fans of melodic hard rock. Check out the opening track of the album, “Pickin’ Up The Pieces”, below.

Tokyo Motor Fist is out 24th February 2017 via Frontiers Records.
