Beverly McClellan – Fear Nothing (Tour Edition)

Beverly McClellan, from the popular TV show “The Voice” USA is due to release  her “Fear Nothing” album on December 1st through Favored Nation throughout the UK and Europe. This will be a special “tour editon” not available outside of the UK and Europe and will feature 3 special bonus songs. Now, having recorded lead vocals for the song “John the Revelator” on Steve Vai’s 2012 album The Story of Light, what does this album have to offer?

The album has quite a chilled out blues feel to it, although on a couple of songs I would say that Beverly has also been influenced in part by country music. I would have to say that the three defining sounds to “Fear Nothing” is piano, guitar, and most of all Beverly McClellan’s powerhouse voice. How best to describe her vocals? My first comparison would be to Janis Joplin and Bonnie Raitt. Very blues rock, very powerful, very controlled, but filled with emotion. Having played the clubs and bars around Fort Lauderdale in Florida for about 20 years and releasing 5 independent albums, she’s had plenty of time to learn to get the best out of her voice for each song, and really put her all into the recording of this one.

My personal highlights were the reflective and smooth “Nobody’s Fault But Mine”, the upbeat “Tender Of The Most” and the very emotional bonus track “A Case Of You”.

Verdict: 7/10. I actually listened to this album three times back to back and enjoyed it. It’s a good album for a relaxing time, but I think perhaps one or two more faster tempo songs would have made this even better. That said, Beverly McClellan is by a mile the best singer I’ve ever heard to come from a TV talent show. And one of the extremely few who deserves a career in music. Why couldn’t Simon Cowell find someone like Beverly McClellan in the UK?
