Adrenaline Rush “Soul Survivor” album review – out April 21st

Following up on their 2014 self-titled debut, Adrenaline Rush return this month with a slightly  different line up and a new album, “Soul Survivor”. Bassist Joel Fox and guitarist Sam Soderlindh were added to the line up following the departure of Ludvig and Soufian. So we had a listen to this recently (actually several listens, but we’ll get to that).

The album kicks off with the high octane track “Adrenaline”, before moving on to the first single “Love Is Like Poison”. This is certainly a very good song, but I think there are actually much better songs on the album.

My Favourite songs here included “Breaking The Chains”, as I really enjoyed the rhythm of that song and can imagine it getting my fist pumping at a concert, along with the catchy “Stand My Ground”. Other stand out tracks here include “Wild Side”, and my personal favourite “Don’t Wake Me Up”, which features some of Tave Wanning’s best vocals along with some of the best guitar riffs on the album.

The final song on this album is “Crash”, possibly the heaviest song on offer here, and was a great way to close the album. “Shock Me”, “My Life”, and the title track “Soul Survivor” are all very good songs.

In “Soul Survivor” we see Adrenaline Rush return with a heavier, more modern sound in comparison to their debut. Erik Mårtensson (of Eclipse) was once again involved as a sounding board, co-writing a song and mastering the finished tracks. The result is a modern sounding album with great production, catchy songs, fast and slick guitars, and while not really a heavy album, a heavy edge is present throughout. I know the band gets a certain amount of criticism for the vocals, as there are those that say Tave Wanning is the wrong fit, the wrong vocal style for the band, but I disagree. I like vocalists that sound unique, that have their own style, and Tave certainly fits that category. Her vocals give the band a unique sound in the genre, and I think she sounds great here.

Final verdict: 8.5/10.

I’ve been listening to this album a lot, and enjoy it more with each play. I do like female singers with a unique sound, in fact it was Sue Willetts of Dante’s Fox and then Tamara Champlin that really got me listening to female fronted melodic rock bands. You can check out a couple of the tracks from Soul Survivor below.
